Basic Formation

Echoes of Faith is a video-assisted catechist/teacher formation program designed by NCCL (National Conference for Catechetical Leadership) and RCL Benziger. Echoes of Faith includes 13 video-assisted modules demonstrating effective catechetical approaches, methods and theology. The videos and companion booklets can be purchased through RCL, and are available for use at no charge. The modules include a companion booklet for each participant with the learning design, articles, reflection questions, and prayers.

Below is an overview of each set:

Catechetical Set
This set helps novice catechists and school religion teachers build a firm foundation with practical teaching ideas. Each module can be completed in four 30-45 minute sessions. Topics: "Getting Started as a Catechist," "Roles of the Catechist," and "The Person of the Catechist."

Theology Set
This set provides in-depth doctrine reviews that can be used with any adult group as well as human stories to connect Church teaching to everyday life. Each module can be completed in four 60-90 minute sessions. Topics: "I Believe/We Believe (Creed)," "Liturgy and Sacraments," "Catholic Morality," "Prayer and Spirituality," and "Introduction to the Scriptures."

Methodology Set
This set develops the teaching skills needed to be successful. These modules give teachers and catechists an understanding of each learner's needs. Each module can be completed in four 30-45 minute sessions. Topics: "Introduction to the Learner," "Methods for Grades 1 & 2," "Methods for Grades 3 & 4," "Methods for Grades 5 & 6," and "Methods for Grades 7 & 8."

Upon completion, the Diocese provides a basic certificate of catechetical ministry upon request of the parish DRE. Following completion of the basic certificate, catechists are encouraged to receive on-going formation. Six hours of enrichment per year are recommended. Advanced Catechist Formation

The Light of Christ Institute. This two-year program is the normal means of formation for Directors / Coordinators of Children’s Catechetical Ministry without a degree in religious education, or theology or its equivalent. For more information about the Light of Christ Institute, please visit:

LIMEX (Loyola Institute of Ministry Extension) is a program offering graduate degrees and certificates in Religious education or pastoral studies.
