The Texas Catholic Conference encourages and fosters cooperation and communication among the dioceses and the ministries of the Catholic Church of Texas, as well as serving as the public policy arm of the Conference's board of directors, the bishops of Texas, before the Texas Legislature, state agencies and the Texas delegation in Congress. Bishop Kevin Vann is a member of the Texas Catholic Conference board.
The public policy issues addressed by the Conference include institutional concerns of the Catholic Church as well as issues related to Catholic moral and social teachings.
The Texas Catholic Conference will coordinate the activities of the 15 Texas Catholic dioceses and a variety of Catholic organizations in Texas before the 82nd Texas Legislature. Through its Texas Catholic Voice website, the Texas Catholic Conference reviews all bills filed by legislators, provides an analysis of each bill and indicates whether the bill is being supported or opposed, based on the legislative agenda set by the bishops in their capacity as TCC board members.
The Texas Catholic Conference also coordinates testimony and other dialogue between Texas Catholic bishops and Texas Catholics and state legislators. The conference also organized the Texas Catholic Advocacy Day at the Legislature. Advocacy Day 2011 will take place on April 6, 2011.
Bishop Vann has organized a Fort Worth Diocese advocacy support program. Watch this site for alerts on how you can help. In addition to linking to public policy positions of Texas Catholic bishops, the site will provide information on important activities.
