Educational Personnel Requirements

(Texas Catholic Conference Education Department):

• A Bachelor’s Degree in the area they are assigned to teach.
• Teachers of Religion must be Catholic.
• A TCCED Deficiency Removal Plan is required if minimum required education hours are not met.
• Salary: The 2010-2011 minimum diocesan entry level salary for teachers with a Bachelor’s Degree and twelve education credits is $26,878.00 (plus benefits). However, each school develops a teacher's salary scale based on this figure.

Do you have to be Catholic to teach in Catholic schools?
No. Catholic schools are an equal opportunity employer. However, teachers of religion classes must be Catholic.

How do I apply?
Contact the Office of Catholic Schools or any of the local Catholic schools for information and an application.

What employee benefits do the schools provide for full-time teachers?
Currently, all benefits are provided by the employer.

What standardized tests are used in Catholic schools?
The Diocese of Fort Worth administers the ITBS (Iowa Tests of Basic Skills) to students in grades 2 through 8. In addition, grades 4 and 7 administer the Otis Lennon School Ability Test. Secondary students, grades 10 and 11, take the PSAT. The Assessment of Catholic Religious Education (ACRE) is given to students in grades 5, 8 and 10/11.

What is the purpose of standardized testing in Catholic schools?
Standardized testing helps schools assess the outcomes of educational programs, helps teachers identify academic talent and helps teachers identify learning difficulties (as a diagnostic tool).

Is funding available for continuing education?
An ongoing education fund makes available monies for conferences, college course work, spiritual development, and like opportunities that contribute to professional growth.
