Our History of Faith
Diocese of Fort Worth Ground Breaking

Since the establishment of the Diocese of Fort Worth on August 9, 1969, a blessed heritage and tradition of Faith has spread throughout the 28 counties that comprise our Diocese. In the early years of the history of Texas, missionaries established the Church at Galveston, bringing the Faith to our pioneer Catholics and spreading the Gospel throughout North Texas. We are truly indebted to these early settlers who led the way in expanding Catholicism in this region, many times enduring hardships but always living with courage, determination and faith. Built on the faith of many diverse people, including Germans, Czechs, Irish, Italians, Hispanics, Vietnamese, Koreans, African Americans, Anglos, and others, our local Church has grown together as a dynamic Church. Though diverse culturally, we are united in a "communio" of Faith as the Body of Christ. The blessing of this growth and unity has been achieved under the leadership of three bishops, the dedication of our clergy and religious, and the participation and generous support of all the Lord's people, always trusting the providence of God.

Because of the faith, dedication and good works of those early pioneers and settlers, by God's abiding grace, we are today a diocesan family comprised of nearly 600,000 Catholics worshiping in 90 parishes and missions throughout 24,000 square miles of North Texas. Looking ahead, we see new opportunities and new challenges as more Catholics move into our Diocese, bringing with them their faith and rich cultural diversity and heritage just as the early pioneers did. As the Diocese of Fort Worth celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2009, the Lord's care brings us to a significant chapter in the history of our local Church. In order to strengthen our Diocese and to ensure we have the financial resources to provide the programs, ministries and services necessary to meet the needs of the faithful, we are undertaking this major campaign. With prayer, we have selected the theme, All Things Possible, for our campaign and have set a goal of raising $40,000,000 over the next four years.
