Religious Education Classes for Deaf Children
We offer religious education classes for deaf children and adults. Classes for children are offered at a variety of parishes in a mainstreamed setting. We work closely with both the Director of Religious Education and the classroom teacher to educate hearing persons to the special gifts and needs of the mainstreamed deaf student. In-service workshops are provided to the hearing members of the Religious Education staff and ongoing in-service training is offered to classroom interpreters.
Self-contained Classes for Deaf Students
Self-contained classes for deaf students are offered on Wednesday evenings at
St. John the Apostle in North Richland Hills (
Map). Classes are offered from 7:00-8:15 PM and are taught by deaf adults or hearing adults familiar with ASL and Deaf Culture. Hearing parents are encouraged to stay and join our Parent/Sibling Sign Class and develop their sign vocabulary while their child is in class. Hearing and deaf adults and children conclude the evening by meeting as a single community, serving as a support group for one another.
GIFT Classes for Deaf Adults
GIFT (Growing In Faith Together) are classes designed to continue the faith formation/development of deaf adults. These classes focus on bible discussions, the rosary, community service projects and community prayer. These classes meet in a self-contained setting on most Wednesday evenings at
St. John the Apostle Catholic Church (

Religious Education Classes for Hearing Children of Deaf Adults
Hearing children of deaf adults may enroll in Religious Education Classes at their home parish or at the deaf community parish. Parents are provided an interpreter as needed so they may participate in their child’s religious education experience.
