Honduras Facts
Honduras is located in Central America. History records that Christopher Columbus discovered the coast of Honduras in 1502 and claimed the territory for Spain - a rule that lasted three centuries. Although granted independence in 1821, it was not until 1838 that Honduras officially became the independent nation it is today. The three major cities of Honduras are: Tegucigalpa (Capital), La Ceiba and San Pedro Sula. It is bordered by Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua.

Education: In 1999, the gross primary enrollment rate was 97.3% and the net primary enrollment rate was 85.7%. Among working children, an estimated 34% complete primary school. A lack of schools prevents many children in Honduras from receiving an education, as do costs such as enrollment fees, school uniforms, and transportation costs.

Infant Mortality Rate: 24.61 deaths / 1,000 live births
Land: It is mostly mountains in the interior with narrow coastal plains. Honduras is slightly larger than Tennessee.
