Integrating Confirmation into a Comprehensive Youth Ministry
The comprehensive approach to youth ministry developed in
YouthWorks provides an excellent opportunity to integrate high school Confirmation preparation into a broader programming framework. This integration will go a long way toward eliminating the chronic problems associated with the current practice of high school Confirmation, e.g. drop-off in participation after the reception of Confirmation.
Integrating Confirmation into a Comprehensive Youth Ministry
Steps to Implementing the Revised Confirmation Guidelines
- Step 1: Read the revised Guidelines for Confirmation
- Step 2: Copy the guidelines and send them to your Confirmation team, pastoral staff (the staff people that want to participate and / or who have a vested interest in Confirmation), interested parents and interested teens
- Step 3: Assess current Confirmation / youth ministry / adolescent religious education and adult education / RCIA efforts
- Step 4: Develop an implementation plan with the leaders from Step 2
- Step 5: Establish a time line for implementing the revised guidelines.
- Step 6: Share your implementation plan with your pastor for approval
- Step 7: Educate the parish on the key elements of the revised guidelines for Confirmation and its relationship with youth ministry and religious education and adult education and RCIA
- Step 8: Train your Confirmation catechists within this new mindset
- Step 9: Invite adolescents and adults to prepare for the sacrament of Confirmation
