What is the Chalice Program?
Many parishes throughout the diocese have implemented the Chalice Program to encourage families to pray for religious vocations. A chalice (or another symbol) is presented to a volunteer family at each weekend liturgy for the family to display in their home while offering prayers for vocations throughout the week. The family brings back the chalice the next weekend when they attend Mass, and the chalice is presented to another family.
Benefits
The Chalice Program brings families together for prayer. It involves the whole parish community in prayer for vocations, and it serves as a weekly reminder for all to pray for vocations. With the help of the pastor and the parish vocation committee, the Chalice program is an instrument to build a culture of vocations in our community.
Participating Parishes
Contact your parish to find out how to be a part of the Chalice Program. If your parish is not currently participating, consider starting the program (with your pastor’s permission). There are
currently 20+ parishes involved in this program.
How to Start the Chalice Program
- Have a committee to do the planning, preferably the Parish Vocation Committee. If you don’t have one, please consider forming one.
- Introduce the program to the parish through announcements a month ahead.
- Buy as many chalices as the number of Masses for the weekend. These chalices can be just a small one to represent the real chalice used for Mass. Some churches buy more than the number of Masses, because a family sometimes forgets to bring back the chalice, unless the planning committee calls and remind them.
- Print the Prayer for Vocations (below) to be included with each chalice.
- Print a sign up card for parishioners to sign up, including the preferred Mass time.
- The planning committee should set up a schedule for families to be present at the Mass of their choice, and call them a few days ahead to remind them.
- At Mass, after communion (preferably before any announcement) the presider should invite the family to come forward and present them with the chalice, inviting them to pray for vocations that week.
- The family brings back the chalice the next weekend when they attend Mass.
Prayer for Vocations
This prayer is to be included with each chalice, however, everyone is welcome to print it out and pray for more vocations.
